Green and Cream

As if someone left the door open and I wandered in,
sat down. Found the porridge on the table -- just right.

Watched a person in the window looking in
as I looked out. Followed her

through the garden, the dark wood,
into a clearing flooded with god-light.

I thought: Life is a cloth you can put on.
I will wear this one --

a green and cream shawl, for now;
warm, like arms, familiar as home.

If I wanted to, I could take it off.
